Poros is a hidden gem in Greece in the southwest of the Saronic Gulf just opposite the Peloponnese and it is a perfect destination for a weekend break or relaxing vacation. The island consists of two islands which are Sphairia and Kalavria. Kalavria is a volcanic rock with pine trees planted on it. You can easily access this island from Piraeus and from Peloponnese. Although the island is small in size, it is filled with sights, history, and beaches that you can explore.

Wander around the Poros Town

This is a city located on an ancient volcano and it is separated from the rest of the island by a small canal. The waterfront is surrounded by a promenade which offers mind-blowing views of the strait and the coastal mountains of Peloponnese. The island is filled with private yachts and neoclassical villas which gives it a class. You can also explore the café or taverna that dots the area. One of the best things to do is to simply sit by the flowerbeds at the promenade where you will see as the ferries and yachts float by. You can then wander around the waterfront where you will find twisting alleys with local shops and restaurants which are hidden from tourists.

Visit the Poros Town Clock Tower

The clock tower is located behind the ferry port on a rocky pedestal and it is among the symbols of the island. The tower features neo-Renaissance architecture which was erected in 1927. To get the top of the tower, you will need to take a stair which can seem tricky during the midday heat. At the top of the rock, you are going to enjoy magnificent views of the area with the Aderes ridge on the Peloponnese. The best thing about the tower is that it faces west which gives you the chance to enjoy mind-blowing views of the sunset.

Go sightseeing at the Askeli Beach in Poros Greece

This beach is located on the coastal road east of the Poros Town and it features a long sandy bay with a gentle bend. The beach attracts lots of sun loungers and palm sun shades in the summer and it gets crowded which means you should come here early in the day. You can also make use of the private sun loungers that belong to the hotels, there are also varieties of beach bars and tavernas that surround the bay. On the west side of the beach, there is an open space where you can simply relax on the sand. The sea at the beach is also inviting but the shore drops away quickly which means it might not be perfect for youngsters.

Explore the Sanctuary of Poseidon in Poros Greece

The sanctuary of Poseidon is among the top archaeological sites which are among the top places that you can visit while you are in Poros. This place is also the place where Demosthenes which is among the great orators of the antiquity and he took his own life by drinking hemlock here. The sanctuary is now in ruins and it dates back to the end of the 6th century BC. It was once made of 6×12 columns. Some of the things that you will see here are four stoae and the remains of a huge propylon.

Go sightseeing at the Citronne Gallery

Poros is a popular escape for numerous Greek cultural figures during the 20th century such as Giorgos Seferis, a poet and Novel laureate and Georgios Theotokas a novelist. One of the best things to do while on the site is to check out the Citronne Gallery which is an 18th-century house in Poros Town which is not far from the promenade from the ferry port. The gallery was named after the lemon grove and was made popular by Politis. The galley opens for just three months during the summer and it features temporary exhibitions. Some of the prominent artist’s works that have been represented here over the years are Costas Varotsos (sculptor), Yiannis Psychopedis (Critical Realist painter), and photographer (Robert McCabe).

Visit the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi

This monastery can be found not close to Askeli Beach and it was established in 1720 after Lakosvos II, the Metropolitan of Athens drank from the nearby spring which was believed to cure his lithiasis. The monastery can be found on a pine-clad slope that overlooks the water. You can explore the main church which is filled with art from the 17th and 18th centuries. Some of the top things not to miss here are iconostasis, Panagia of the Zoodochos Pigi. You are going to see the mind-blowing Christ Pantocrator which was composed around 1780 on the western wall of the church. The monastery also houses the tombs of Nikolis Apostolis and Manolis Tombazis who are two decorated naval commanders from the Greek War of Independence.
